Wayamba Provincial Environmental Director Saman Senanayake yesterday said sand and clay transport from the Ma-Oya and Deduru-Oya was banned by a Supreme Court in 2006.
However, a group of drivers transport clay and sand illegally with the support of police officers in the area, he said..
The public including law enforcement officers and schoolchildren were educated about environmental protection but illegal activities harming the environment take place more often, he said.
Senanayake said a national policy should be formulated to protect the environment.
