First Indian Nadu rice shipment arrives today

The first shipment of rice ordered from India is scheduled to arrive at the Colombo Port today.

The shipment is the first consignment of 12,500 Metric Tonnes out of 72,000 MT of Nadu rice to be imported to the country from India.

The orders were placed on the direction of the Cost of Living Committee to overcome rice shortages and price manipulations by unscrupulous elements.

The Cooperative Wholesale Establishment (CWE) under the Industry and Commerce Ministry will receive the imports and will make it available to Lanka Sathosa. The wholesale cost is expected to be Rs.72 per Kg while the retail price is to be at Rs.7.
