Garbage attracts wild elephants

The people of Vallimathagama, Menikpuragama and Kochchipatana have to live in fear as wild elephants come to Situlpawwa Road damaging the electric fence to consume garbage that some individuals have been dumping on the road.

The villagers use this road to reach their villages.

Last week, several villagers who were returning home after work in the night had a narrow escape when a wild elephant tried to charge them. The residents allege that some people from other areas of Kataragama carry garbage by three wheelers and dump them there.Meanwhile, the Wildlife Conservation Department has put up notice boards along the road advising not to litter the roadside.
