Death of former Minister A. H. M. Azwer

Former Minister A. H. M. Azwer passed away yesterday at the age of 80. Azwer entered Parliament in 1989 as a National List MP, and functioned as Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and the Minister of State for Muslim Religious and Cultural Affairs.

Azwer started his career as a journalist at the Lake House Thinakaran newspaper in 1960 and later joined the Chintamani and Thinapathi newspapers of Independent Group of Newspapers.

He has also functioned as the Editor of several newspapers.

He also functioned as a Monitoring MP for Ministry of Mass Media and Information.

Azwer was later appointed as Presidential Advisor on Parliamentary Affairs after he resigned from Parliament in November 2014, paving the way for his seat to be given to Ameer Ali of the All Ceylon Muslim Congress.

He was also a broadcaster and has functioned as an announcer, drama artiste and Tamil language cricket commentator of the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation.

A.H.M.Azwer was an old boy of Zahira College, Colombo.
