President convenes special meeting on disaster relief

 

President Maithripala Sirisena in a special meeting with members of his government yesterday assigned affected districts to ministers to ensure that they are brought back to normalcy within a period of two months. 

The President which had been summoned at the Presidential Secretariat sought to assess the progress of the government machinery in dealing the current disaster situation in the country.  It also laid special emphasis on the role played by each of the ministers, state ministers and deputy ministers in relief activities in their relevant electorates.

The President had asked ministers from districts which have not been affected by the floods to visit those which have been affected and help in coordination and management of the disaster situation. They are to assist the politicians of the respective areas.

Minister of Primary Industries, Daya Gamage who hails from the Digamadulla District  said he had been assigned responsibility of the Kegalle district, “Some were also assigned badly affected electorates which need additional attention”, he added.

The President asked that we all work as a team to ensure that full recovery is made, explained the Minister.

“It is like being given the responsibility of a ministry”, he said.

The recent floods wreaked havoc in the districts of Colombo, Gampaha, Kegalle, Kaluthara, Galle, Matara, Hambantota and Ratnapura.
