WHO pledges support to Lanka’s health sector

Newly appointed Director General of the World Health Organisation Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus assured full WHO assistance towards Sri Lanka in upgrading the country's health services. Ghebreyesus gave this assurance when he met Health Nutrition and Indigenous Medicine Minister Dr. Rajitha Senaratne on the sidelines of the WHO 70th annual sessions held in Geneva. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus was elected Director General of WHO at its 70th sessions to succeed former Director General Dr. Margaret Chan who completed her tenure.

The new Director General is an Ethiopian who had held the Foreign Affairs and Health Portfolios before.

Sri Lanka too voted in his favour at the election held in Geneva.

Ghebreyesus also expressed his desire to visit Sri Lanka in the near future,
