Modi, Ranil to inaugurate Gangaramaya Vesak Zone

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe will inaugurate the Gangaramaya Vesak Zone on May 11, Indian High Commissioner for Sri Lanka Taranjit Singh Sandhu said yesterday.

The Indian High Commissioner said that Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Sri Lanka would be a kind of pilgrimage. “The Prime Minister’s presence will add weight to the International Vesak Day celebrations,” he added. “We share a common heritage and you have seen Prime Minister Modi speaking on The Buddha,”High Commissioner Sindhu said.

“Over 1.2 billion people will watch the Indian Prime Minister participating in the Vesak celebrations,” the Indian HC said .

Sri Lanka takes the leadership and the Indian Prime Minister’s arrival will add more weight to this important event,” High Commissioner Sandhu emphasised. The High Commissioner said there would be no economic objectives attached to the Prime minister’s visit. Prime Minister Modi will also join President Maithripala Sirisena to a private dinner. The following day, the Indian Premier will attend the main celebrations of the International Vesak Day and will be flown to Dick Oya to open a hospital. Following an interaction with people in the area, mainly estate workers of Tamil origin, Prime Minister Modi will proceed to Kandy where he would call on the Asgiriya and Malwatte Mahanayake Theras and receive their blessings.

The Indian Prime Minister will then leave for Delhi.
