Malwatte, Asgiriya Mahanayake Theras send 21 point letter to President

On the instructions of the Mahanayake Theras of the Malwatte and Asgiriya Chapters, the Anunayaka Theras and senior Monks of the Karaka Sangha Sabha of the two chapters presented a letter containing 21 points on nationally important issues to President Maithripala Sirisena in Kandy yesterday.

The 21 point letter includes finding a political solution to the North and East issue while further securing the powers of the President and preserving stronger ties between the central government and provinces.

In addition the letter contains a proposal on not to open the road in front of the Dalada Maligawa and to ease traffic congestion build the proposed double lane tunnel as well as expand the Rajapihilla Mawatha and Louie Peiris road.

Other points include, if the government plans to bring a new constitution or make amendments to the existing one make the people aware about those structural changes.

Introduce a new hybrid electoral system which ensures a parliament member to every electorate and also gives due recognition to preferential votes.

Make the public aware about the progress of the reconciliation programme carried out by a council and also have a regulatory mechanism to monitor the NGO’s.

The President after receiving the letter has told the Maha Sangha that he will pay special attention to its content.
