Final decision on Indian fishing boats soon: Amaraweera

The final decision on the fishing boats of Indian poachers will be taken soon in accordance with the committee report, Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said.

Responding to a suggestion made by Northern fishermen, a committee in this regard comprising officers of the Fishing Ministry and Northern fishermen was appointed by the Minister yesterday.

Minister Amaraweera was addressing the media at the Ministry auditorium after meeting a group of representatives of Northern fishermen.

Northern fishermen requested the Minister to appoint a committee to take decision on the Indian boats by presenting a set of proposals.The Minister said that he will take A decision whether to release the boats, which were taken into custody by Sri Lanka Navy on the charges of illegal poaching. The Minister added that the set of proposals of the Northern fishermen will be considered by Ministry officials and discussed at the third round of talks to be held tomorrow between high ranking Sri Lankan and Indian fishing sector officials.

Speaking on the issue, Minister Amaraweera added that he will obey the committee report in this regard.
